Karla Brewster

Flagstaff City Councilmember
Class of 2008

In my former life, I was a teacher. I have taught elementary age students and community college students.  In the Glendale Elementary District, I taught K-8 physical education, coached all the girls’ sports and taught 6th grade classroom. I was the athletic director for the last 2 years that the district funded an after school program.  At Glendale community College, I was adjunct faculty for 12 years, teaching physical education, health and recreation lecture classes. I have a BA and MA in Education.
At John C. Lincoln Hospital I was an administrative secretary in the Volunteer department which had 300 active volunteers.  Since moving to Flagstaff 10 years ago, I have been an administrative assistant for the English department, the Honors program and currently for the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies at Northern Arizona University.   I also tutored for GED classes through Coconino Community College.
In all of my positions, I have been involved with and worked with a diverse population, both ethnically and age. Since I have developed an interest and passion for politics, I decided to look into running for office and selected the Flagstaff City Council. Being an elected PC and being involved in the Democratic party have given me a background in politics at the local level. I hope to be able to use these experiences and my years of experience with people to not only get elected, but to represent the citizens of Flagstaff for the common good of all concerned.
Councilmember Karla Brewster was elected to a four year term on the Flagstaff City Council in May 2008 and re-elected in 2012.  A native of Oregon, Karla lived most of her live in the Phoenix area until moving to Flagstaff in 1998 where she enjoys working with diversity.
